The client, a multi-billion-dollar game developer headquartered in Taiwan, set its sights on conquering the Japanese market with a new casino-themed mobile game. But they immediately hit a massive roadblock. In Japan, the very word “casino” carries a heavy stigma. Almost no influencers were willing to be associated with the campaign. To make matters worse, during planning, nationwide news broke about illegal online casino crackdowns—further poisoning public sentiment.
“How can we possibly introduce this product, in this environment, and still succeed?”
This was more than just a marketing challenge—it was a cultural taboo.
To tackle this near-impossible mission, we designed and executed a multi-layered strategy. First, we worked with four specialized agencies and scoured every platform, building a candidate pool of thousands of influencers in just a few months. From this massive list, we carefully identified creators with audiences that showed lower resistance to casino-related content, and strategically engaged them.
We chose not to shy away from controversy but to flip it into an advantage. Campaign videos began by tapping into trending Japanese content, lowering audience resistance before introducing the game naturally. We also leaned into the broader debate around casino gaming itself—directly addressing legality and framing the app as an authentic form of entertainment. This bold, transparent approach built trust and positioned the brand as refreshingly honest compared to competitors.
The result was nothing short of remarkable. Within two months of launch, the campaign generated over 1M impressions and drove app downloads that far exceeded expectations. What began as a cultural headwind became a competitive advantage.
